Fibrous Proliferative Lesions of the Oral Mucosa

Abstract
The aim of this study was to observe if there were any differential points to determine between reactive and neoplastic peripheral fibrous lesions of the oral mucosa. A total of 101 cases of reactive lesions such as irritation fibroma(IF), epulis
fissuratum(EF), and peripheral ossifying firoma(POF), and 8 cases of peripheral odontogenic fibroma(PODF) were reviewed histologically. Proliferative activity was analyzed immunohistochemically using the proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA).
¥á-smooth muscle actin was also immunohistochemically stained to observed myofibroblasts.
In this study, the reactive fibrous lesions showed various histologic features depending on the origin of their proliferative cells, however, there were no definite histologic criteria to definite the fibrous lesions of the oral mucosa. While POF
showed
positive reaction to PCNA, PODF revealed no PCNA positivity as well as IF and EF. This study suggests that PODF may occur as a reactive process rather than a neoplastic growth.
